I've always wanted to light and let loose paper lanterns, but since I live near both an airport and a base (and the nearest park/open area is miles beyond me) I'd probs get in trouble with the feds for "releasing UFOs" into the sky

Same! I live 15 min outside a big city, so light pollution and the hustle and bustle of planes and helicopters make any time for releasing lanterns inopportune.

Maybe I can convince my parents to let me light and release some when travel someplace quiet over the summer (maybe at the beach or the Philippines)

if you google lantern festivals there are places around the world that host Lantern events, some supply the lanterns etc for it and they happen at different times of the year - maybe check if there is one in your area?

if you just light some candles does it still count for the Lantern festival? Or do you have to float them or release them into the air?

In my country, we called it "Cap Go Meh"
we celebrate it 15 days after chinese new year

but we rarely use any lantern
yet we usually have this dish at home & almost every chinese restaurant
exclusively for that day

What's in it? I recognize shrimp chips and veggies, but that's all. Is it spicey?

The MOON festival or Mid-Autumn Festival : "Falling on the 15th day of the 8th month according to the Chinese lunar calendar, the Mid-Autumn Festival is the second grandest festival in China after the Chinese New Year."

"Mooncakes are traditional Chinese pastries eaten to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival. The festival typically involves much giving, receiving, and eating of mooncakes. Chinese mooncakes are the traditional dessert/snack of Mid-Autumn Festival. They are round in shape, like the full harvest moon of Mid-Autumn's evening."

THE DIFFERENCE WITH THE LANTERN FESTIVAL is: "The Lantern Festival or the Spring Lantern Festival is a Chinese festival celebrated on the fifteenth day of the first month in the lunisolar Chinese calendar. It marks the final day of the traditional Chinese New Year celebrations, and falls on some day in February or March in the Gregorian calendar."

Speaking of lanterns back on the last day of September, which was the second last day of my summer job and the last night of the ignite the night, someone did one of them paper lanterns
It was pretty high in the sky when I noticed
Seriously?
At a theme park?
By the screen where the show is done?
Where people are gathering?
And, you know, roller coasters?
Of which one is WOODEN?!
I think it landed at the nearby lake, but seriously, that one lantern would have done a lot of damage

That does sound dangerous, Kit - hopefully people will be more conscientious.

HARVEST MOON TONIGHT!!

"the Chinese moon festival, or Mid-Autumn Festival, is celebrated in conjunction with the harvest moon. Festival goers will eat special desserts known as moon cakes and release lanterns into the sky."

I just hope they don't convince others to do it
Cuz then otherwise there will be one that gets where it shouldn't and fuck it up for everyone

It always seems like someone messes it up for the rest of us. We have a cliff access to the coastline beach, which has a pathway to use but it seems like every few months someone has to try and go down a different way (usually falling) so there is talk of closing the site at night - but in the meantime it costs a lot for the rescue teams to go in since in it is hard to access and ends up costing a lot - of money and sometimes people paying with their lives.

The lanterns for the autumn festival were so cute - I have a few extras if anyone missed out.
