The current trend of what's going on is everyone and their brothers are training their AI on forums etc. (user content). So that's been a lot of traffic, but the bot-net rapid-fire attacks (DDOS = Distributed Denial Of Service) are trying to overload the server. What most sites are doing these days are using gatekeepers like Cloudflare, so these things are handled by those kinds of services. These types of PITA attacks are (inentional or not) pushing admins to sign up for Cloudflare. I don't think we've been "targeted" per sey.
Over the years I've come to appreciate keeping as many things "in house" as possible. Several months ago Cloudflare went down and a good portion of the internet (almost half) went down. That's why we've been going down this path. (Personally I hate the click here if you're a human business.) It's been complex, but we've made good progess. <finger's crossed!>
