The thing that's changed peoples' thoughts into action has been communication (person to person, town cryer, printing, radio, movies, tv, and now the internet). Censorship is their last attempt to stop the inevitable (other than outright murder).

(And with all great power comes great responsibility--think propaganda).

Once people see how much better it can be they start looking at what's wrong... I am biased, but the concept of liberty that America pursues is the best thing humans have come up with for us as a society. Censorship stifles everything and is ripe for corruption and vice versa.
