you can still level them if you immortalize, they just won't starve. BUT You can't level them if you give them the fountain of youth potion though.

I have them immoral, but I'd still feel bad if I don't feed them and clean them. orz.

Just play with them and they will be fine and keep growing! I give mine a treat once in awhile but I couldn't keep up the feathers and my game rolls when I was feeding and giving them baths. This way I can go a day or two without interacting if I need to and not have to put them in the spa.
