Inline code / breaking bbcode tags

Inline code / breaking bbcode tags

Postby Akuyi » Sat Jun 01, 2019 1:41 pm

I often find it helpful to use bbcode tags as words in my sentences for explaining them, e.g. like this:

Code: Select all
To post an image, you surround the image url with [img] and [/img].

I haven't stumbled across a way for doing this on Windlyn yet. A working way on other sites is breaking the tags like so:

Code: Select all
[img[i][/i]]

but Windlyn optimizes empty bbcode tags away and it's not working. Is there any other way?

I'm not sure what you're asking. Code examples should be in a code tag as you've done. Are you saying img tags should allow italics?

The code tags will display the code in a block on a separate line, not in-line. I wanna be able to write something like

Does that make any sense? Image

OK, if I understand, tags are removed if there's no data. That's normal behavior. What I've done is inserted some text between tags. For example (to use your example):

To post an image, you surround the image url with [img]and[/img].

And:
All image modifiers in this section can be used with the avatar tags. Here we'll use [img]<img_url_here>[/img], but you can modify any of the following with them, as they are shortcuts to image files; [av], [ghost], [robot], [selfie], [outfit], and emotes.

Anything other than a <space> can be inserted in there like a <period> [img].[/img], but one work-around is to insert a smilie between tags and it gets the results you're after. The problem is if you edit the message, you'll lost the tag. [img][/img]

So what you're saying is I need to sacrifice my grammar. xD

I also think your solution only works if you always close the tags you open. If I just wanna write [img] and later include an actual image, hell will break loose.

I guess if you're cutting and pasting something already written, then you'd have to edit something in between complete tags (open and close).

A single open tag doesn't seem to have any issues. Or maybe I don't understand what you're saying about it. Those should remain if you edit a post.

FYI, the reasoning behind removing empty tags is a long standing bbcode convention. The idea was that should someone mistakenly insert tags, they'll just be removed. Since people who do understand tags would/should know better, it was deemed better to place the extra burden of understanding how to use them on these folks.

Oh, I didn't know it was a convention.

What I mean is, you cannot do something like this:

Code: Select all
Shhh, it's a secret, but since it's you I'm going to share it with you. It's the [img] tag. [img]http://yoursmiles.org/ksmile/tuzki/k5466.gif[/img]

It will turn into:

Shhh, it's a secret, but since it's you I'm going to share it with you. It's the [img]tag.%20[img]http://yoursmiles.org/ksmile/tuzki/k5466.gif[/img]

It's not just not displaying correctly, but even changing what I originally typed in the editor.

But I guess there is no tag for inline code then that we can just use out of the box?

OK, I *think* I'm understanding!

You want an inline bbcode code function! (I was getting all hung up with the details like there was a bug.)

That should be fairly straight forward and I think it would be a good addition. I'll discuss with Diana.

Yes I wanna write bbcode that does not get interpreted but just be printed as bbcode in the middle of my sentences. That's what I want! Image

OK, I had to ask Diana for a little help, but we now have inline code  insert_code_here

Code: Select all
[icode][/icode]

Hmmm, looks like it's stripping out code. Stand by...

I have to flip this over to Diana as it's become higher than my pay grade. She knows what to do, so when she has time....

In the mean time, you can use [*img]Insert_URL[*/img] (insert a character like *) or <img>Insert_URL</img> to stop the parsing. Sorry I couldn't do more.

Ok I'll wait until Di has time for this then. I didn't expect such a quick solution anyway. XD
