[✔] Idea: Notification for announcements

It would be epic if we could be notified about new announcements, like for event threads or the monthly update threads! It could be a button that shows up under the "you have..." in the side pane if (and only if?) there is a new announcement.

I plan on giving all notifications a makeover, but I've been putting it off to develop more fun features.

I'm always stalking the new posts for event and update announcements and it would help a lot if it would just pop up in the notice section!

Are you suggesting posts to the Events forum also go into a separate notification? I think that may get a little annoying for some users, since any user can post in them. I'm open to it though!

Announcements show up on the portal/home page, if you're just looking to check if something new has been posted.

Hmmm, I'd prefer one notification area/button for both updates and events, but if the buttons only show up if there is a new update, then I don't mind two separate buttons either.

I think only important event updates should trigger a notice, not everyone's posts in the event thread. Maybe an automatic notice upon thread creation and then you guys have an option to trigger another notification if you make some important post?
