I think the invention of elastic would have been a game changer for the legging/sock situation. 100% cotton socks or even silk without elastic would have been a hassle for me.

Lemon Cheesecake wrote:Renascence faire always seemed like it would be fun to be able to be part of, and not just being the spectator.

Why is it they seem to choose the hottest month to host the faire?

The amount of layers & binding , restrictive clothing the women had to wear back then is insane .. I think the "peasants" had it a little better without all the heavy cloth & frills... styles were really cool looking though!

---------------
It is a lot of fun and some Shops will give you a discount because you work for the faire :D !! Not like super discounts but it is still a discount like: I could buy an item that originally would be $25.00 and I could get it for $20.00 instead.. me being on Cast, makes it a bit cheaper to go to the Ren Faire xD !!
-
Well I do the Ren Faire that takes place between Sept & Oct.. Sometimes in Sept some days can be hot and in Oct some days would be cold.
-
But There is one that takes place in July and I think that's crazy.. July is the hottest month..
As long as we eat a little something and stay hydrated the Hot Days aren't that bad. Still Sweaty and stuff but we can live through it !! I planned on getting a bunch of Hydration Powder to put in my water, so I can survive the hot days..
-
But Yeah the women clothing is crazy. It kind of makes you wonder how they got through the hot days back then.. Yeah Peasants have less frills and stuff and Heck Yeah, It's a cool style ^_^ !!
----
Also, I had the Audition today and I told the director a couple of character ideas and the second idea I gave her, she seem to like :D !! I also told her an idea, that I had for Halloween and she seemed open to that idea too.

Yeah, it probably would.

Oh? yeah, I don't think we use silk.. But we did get a New Costumer this year. So it should be interesting to see what she'll bring to the table.

Do you get to travel around to different cities that host the faire's?

Is it a volunteer or paid job? Sounds like yo have to pay an entrance fee anyway?

No, I don't. I kind of wish I could but a lot of them are too far away for me to travel, the one I work at is in my hometown, like a 5 minute drive if that..
-
It's Paid. We get paid by the day not the hour. It's not much but at least it's something ^_^ !!
-
When I work for the Faire, I don't gotta pay to enter. I just enter!!

Free is always good! Getting paid for gas money and perhaps to pay for a meal while being a part of group all enjoying the same thing is it's own reward.

That sounds like a good perk!

Something I just read today ( from our local ren. faire website):

"For a thousand years, the making of ale had been women’s domain. Every village had its brewster, every cottage its small-batched fermentation. The work was unglamorous but vital—turning spoiled grain into something safe, even nourishing. The women wore tall hats to be seen at market, kept cats to guard their grain stores, and carved notches in their stirring sticks to mark good batches. Practical choices all, though later these would be twisted into evidence of darker crafts: the hat became a witch’s cone, the cat a familiar, the stick a wand."

I found that information very intriguing!!

Yeah! Also having my own money makes my life at the Faire easier xD !! Or it'll give me the money enough to get like something like a Halloween Costume or whatever!! Yeah! They are cool people

I do enjoy historical shows & reading about history & I think the characterization of time periods by documentaries, faires or docents in museums re-enacting the time periods helps bring them to life.

Vests, britches & baggy shirts would be an easy sew ... the women's dresses a lot harder and so much more material! Would be fun to try to sew your own if you could find the right material.
