Well, sounds like you're having fun and getting paid, so you're doing great!

Fame is fleeting and a burden--be careful what you wish for, as the saying goes. I've done some acting in school (part of the program to understand directing). While cathartic when playing some parts, it takes a certain type--which I am not.

Is wig making as one thinks it is? Weaving hair into a net, then cutting/styling lit? Do you work by hand or is there a machine involved?

I had a friend that did FX in Hollywood and I remember them inserting hair into latex with a small tool, one and two strands at a time. Woo! Talk about patience!

Well you sort of got the idea down. What I do is basically tie knots into the lace anywhere from up to 1 to 5 or 6 hairs at a time. What your friend did was called punching and is a highly valued skill in the industry if you can do it well. What I do is called ventilating and I'm just glad no many people know how to do it well or I'd be out of a job lol. That or I'd have significantly drop my pay rate x.x;;

Yep, the term punching rings a bell. So you do this all by hand? I suppose you do this with human hair as well as synthetic? Your eyesight must be fantastic! :)

When I worked in Hollywood I was always fascinated by toupees and hair pieces (facial etc.) that were done so well that even at the hairline you couldn't see the thing. It's amazing how well makeup people can hide things!

What kind of makeup work do you do?

Yes it's all done by hand and eyesight is terrible now lol. My eye doctor has actually told me to find another line of work buuuuut this pays too well. I use a magnifying glass along with my eyeglasses when I work so I look a little cooky. Like... an old toymaker?

Yeah doing fronts on wigs is my favorite because I like doing 1 hair knots and making things detailed. Takes forever though.

Um I don't like working or making prosthetic pieces so I stick to like beauty makeup and generally just painting on special effects. I need to get much better with my makeup though.

Oh, like the extensions surgeons and dentists use? That's a good idea. Take care of your eyes!

SFX like on aliens and monsters? Or blood and gore?
Do you airbrush?

Sorry so many questions. I just find it very interesting. Thanks for sharing! :smile:
