I used chat I had around the house in creative ways for the Barbies, fake flower petals as "fairy" clothing, push pop plastic tube part as umbrellas, cardboard boxes as the doll houses, etc. A lot of creativity and imagination and I was all set! ^_^

That's mostly all I had. Hot glue gun and stuff laying around the house.
The kids now a days have all kinds of games and electronic devices.

i mean, kids can still be creative even with devices, it can be a lot cheaper too and take up less space

I'm not sure about cheaper, but they could take up less space than a crafting area.

depending on the materials yes, and in the long run it would be much cheaper to just have one device over restocking in materials every month or so

All of my stuff was basically "salvaged" items. Things that no one wanted and would have ended up in the trash anyways.

dragoness - my sibs and i just repurposed any box we had at home. boxes could do a lot

galled - oh man yeah! i used to have a bunk bed so i would hang blankets off the bars of the top bunk and made mini 'rooms' in my bed :0 it made it seem a lot bigger that way

I love bunk beds - making your own space with the blankets is a great hide out, especially when you have to share a room
