PSA: Pumpkins

Postby Ryvvi » Thu Nov 03, 2016 7:34 am

It has come to my attention via Diana calling green pumpkins unripe that you guys dont have green pumpkins in america
first of all wtf. Orange pumpkins are a weird american thing that only appear in australia for halloween as a gimmick. (and the rest of the world but whatever, australia is right)
SECONDLY. this is what real NORMAL pumpkins look like:
Kent Pumpkin:

Jarrahdale Pumpkin:

and the slightly different but still different Queensland Blue Pumpkin:

and then theres your weird nugget pumpkin i guess

This has been a PSA, thank you for your attention

Yeah, the pumpkins we use for carving are usually orange, but the ones for eating are anything between orange, yellow, almost white and green. There are even red ones I think.

And isn't zucchini also a pumpkin?

Wow! I never even knew there were green pumpkins, I know there are white ones. In America, regular pumpkins are orange lol.

Your Kent pumpkin looks similar to our acorn squash! Wish you could send seeds of your white and green pumpkins (Jarrahdale and Queensland blue). Pumpkins take a considerable amount of time to ripen as compared to other vegetables so maybe that is a reason we don't grow them year round?

The orange colored pumpkins have more of a sweet potato flavor so maybe that is why we like them more? I don't know of many people who are even squash fans. But we do eat quite a few roasted pumpkin seeds.

Canned pumpkin is sold year round and used more for breads and puddings.

I think some restaurants are starting to serve pumpkin in season as a vegetable side dish. I don't know why there aren't more takers. Any squash just seems so long to cook that I opt out, especially when it tastes better if it is boiled/steamed and then baked afterwards.

I do not eat pumpkin unless it is in pie, or just the seeds.

Those are so neat!

I love Pumpkins! Would love to start a collection of all the different types.
The easiest collection would be to start an album on Pinterest and get pictures of all the different types. -makes a note to do that later-
