Some studies pointed to a fungus, another parasites, another said mites. Another study blamed shrinking habitats. No consensus, so no solutions. :(

Hm.. I wonder if it has something to do with the honey. Because it seems that when that hive dies other bees take a while before they'll raid it for honey. And other animals do too. Have they tested the honey and the hives? Perhaps it is a fungus or perhaps it's some sort of bacteria that grows in the honey, and then causes problems, but dies off after a period of time. That might be why. It could be something dangerous or toxic growing in the honey or in the hives.

Or something in the plant nectar... Hm...

Interesting angle on the fungus affecting the bees/honey...it would sound logical especially if the weather stays cooler for longer. Bees need a minimum temperature to fly and they need a good supply of honey to survive the winter.

Yes. And much of the stuff accepted as science is not science.

You probably remember scientific method requires a hypothesis, testing/experiments and conclusions. Much of what is passed as science today is based on historical data (think modeling and predictions) and cause and effect theories rather than scientific proof. With the bees they may find fungus in dead bee colonies, but the mechanism that killed the bee is unknown. They aren't even sure if the fungus was there before or after the hive is analyzed.

Ahhhhhh, I seeeeee... That's true. I didn't realize... I thought they still used the scientific method with the data. The data narrows down the likely causes, then time to hypothesize from what info you gather, then test and experiment to prove or disprove hypothesis, then do it again if the conclusion isn't certain.

Hm...

isn't most of our science just hypothetical? We base things off what we think we interrupted the answer to be and then later find out it was wrong.

I'm still upset they took pluto out of being a planet - did they ever put it back into the science books as a planet?

Lemon, it may be just a matter of semantics or rather terminology, but I get what you're saying. Humans have a very bad history of being wrong about pretty much everything (everything we have thought gets disproven as time goes on). However, science, well true science that is methodically proven using scientific method, is closer to the truth (another one of those words that defies ample description) than most stuff that's accepted as science (especially by the media, but schools are guilty as well!). What's somewhat disheartening is the universe is so complex that even science that's accepted as true science today may not account for the nearly infinite variables that may alter the basic premise of the conclusion/s we believe to be true. So in that sense, science is good enough to suit our needs today--until it isn't. :/

Yup, before we knew about atoms and cells... we thought we understood how things worked, then boom a ton of new variables opened up with new discoveries causing a need to re-evaluate previous solutions... Gosh... that sounds tiring as hell.
