Is that a fact? An... art (i) fact?

That was clever, Arc!

I wonder what the tombs actually smelled like when they opened them, besides the smell of death I mean.

hmmm does that mean if a tomb is sealed off like a vault that after awhile there is no air? Isn't that what helps preserve what's inside?

So...if there is no air does it have a smell?

I guess it depends on what you mean by "air." I suspect the off gassing of what's inside would displace what "air" is inside if there are leaks (you'd be converting the biomass of the body to gas) so there it would create pressure in the vault higher than outside of the vault.

However, if the vault is air tight, it would become pressurized and would let out a puff when opened. You see this in the movies all of the time--when the hero opens the vault/sarcophagus/old sealed thing, a puff of dust is expelled.

I think you might mean an airtight vault with a vacuum. If there's no "air"/any gas, as in a vacuum, there would be no smell because we need a medium to smell--bring the molecule to our smell sensors. What's interesting is space (a vacuum) is said to have a smell. Of course, a human can only smell it once you're back in the pressurized spaceship or space station. Oh, space has a metallic smell! Probably due to all of the space junk we burn up there... (just kidding).

Maybe they can "can" the smell of space & sell it for those of us who will never make it up to space (except maybe to stick our cremated remains on a planet or moon to become fertilizer).

edit: "What does the space smell like?
We can't smell space directly, because our noses don't work in a vacuum. But astronauts aboard the ISS have reported that they notice a metallic aroma – like the smell of welding fumes – on the surface of their spacesuits once the airlock has re-pressurised."

Here's another source:

https://www.science.org.au/curious/spac ... %20cookie'.

"But there are other smells in space besides, well, space. Comets, planets, moons and gas clouds have their own unique scent too."

I guess I'm proof that if you fill your head with enough useless trivia the tidbits eventually add up to something!

And the astronauts say the moon smells like gunpowder???
Is the moon just one big keg of gunpowder??? Will the moon explode if someone lit a match on it??

More useless trivia: Gunpowder explosions need oxygen to burn--there may not be enough of it up there to be an issue (moon dust is not gunpowder--would have been a major concern when the moon landing astronauts fired up their engines to return home).

More trivia: Most don't realize that gasoline engines really burn so much more oxygen than gasoline that it really could be called an "oxygen engine." ("For each gram of gasoline that burns, the engine needs about 14 grams of oxygen.")

LOL, I guess I've been storing this stuff in my head all of these years so I could converse with Lemon about things we're interested in!

Thanks for sharing, Galled. You are a wealth of information.

It's funny how a little piece of information, trivia, does stick with us.

Nice the internet is like an encyclopedia at our finger tips.
