actually I find the possibilities for nanobot technology fascinating...so much could be accompolished - however, I'd hate for the end result to be like the episodes on Stargate:Atlantis where the nanobots are taking over and destroying everything.

If it could be designed and maintained by a bunch of geniuses who were really nice... It'd be nice. Like, people who wouldn't let it get out of hand or let it be used for bad stuff.

Nanobots tend to be portrayed in popular sci-fi as being mechanical (as in super miniature robots), but the reality today and foreseeable future is they're biological--think reprogrammed virus'. The difference is their task/s are the designer's rather than to reproduce and consume the host cell.

Yes, it would be great to have them fix and do things, but the expense will not be trivial--and not mainly due to the tech, but due to the insurance and law folks.

technology has such potential for good - the only problem is that it only takes someone to develop it into a weapon and ruin it.

Eeeh, being responsible isn't enough generally. Because there's always some irresponsible person somewhere. But life is all about unintended consequences and mistakes so.... For example, in the experiments... a deadly nanobot plague could be released, causing an extinction event~
