That is so strange.
How would the type of wheat determine the sex of the baby though? Was there any scientific proof to that part?
That part seems a little stretched unless the hormones in the pee were slightly different depending on the sex of the baby and that's what caused one wheat to grow and not the other.

supposedly the article said determining the sex by the wheat or barley wasn't as successful as figuring out if the woman was pregnant...but interesting how people have been trying to figure out what they were going to have for centuries upon centuries.

Question: does the pregnancy test work with pregnant animal urine? Could this be a new way of quickly sprouting wheat in a climate with a short growing season?

Yeah, it was a good one. There's another one with misspelling of Ouiji Board.

I wonder what the answer is?

Futuristic desert "worlds" can be found in the UAE, Abu Dhabi, etc. (ultra-oil-rich modern desert cities).

Essentially all that's needed to grow food is water, carbon dioxide, and an energy source (think hydroponics). Like most human problems, it's a cost problem. Tech can solve most things, but it's the cost that holds us back.

I'm thinking of those movies where technology is lost and people are stranded or living like they are "camping out", with water sources contaminated or salt.

The techniques of camping out hasn't changed much in hundreds of years. The basics have been the same since humans have been around. Decontaminating water low-tech style is slow, but doable. However, if you have contaminants like radiation, it's likely there's radiation everywhere and clean water is perhaps lesser of an issue as moving out of the area becomes the priority.
