That's so awesome! One tends to take family gatherings for granted when growing up, but you sure miss them when you don't have them. I think it's become worse in modern times--people tended to stay put a half century ago. You guys will have a wonderful time!

Back to language:

I absolutely love how you put that food is the universal language! Yep, sharing meals. :cheer:

I've taken Spanish and French in school (and picked up a little Chinese), so I do understand the gender bits, and conjugations. I think of these as kind of "language specific secondary rules" because I've been able to "communicate" (and I use the term *very* loosely) with people who do not speak English (my native language). Granted there is a lot of pointing and hand gestures involved, and in my broken x (fill in the language) I sometimes can recite some nouns (or I can point at it), but I'm at a loss of how you can get beyond some basic adjectives. I have have a hard time understanding the concepts like in Chinese. It seems the same word (at least in sound) can many many different things depending I suppose on context or how it's said?

Like the word "yes." I watch subbed Chinese shows and movies. They'll say "yes" on audio (sounds like "shur"), but the sub title will say various things, which are all in the "positive." Like I said, I'm an English speaker, so perhaps English is more complicated than it needs to be. (One-off illogical bit English rules, pronunciation different, but spelling is the same, etc..)

Thanks for taking the time!

Lemon, I've heard the same origin of writing in Asia by archeologists on the various documentaries (I can't stop watching them... if I can stay awake!). I seem to recall it happened 5000+ years ago (way before the imperials). The key was writing. Without it, it was difficult to pass ideas along of distances (crossing the China sea back then was quite an undertaking!). Another interesting tid-bit was writing back them was on strips of wood (I want to say bamboo strips).

Hi! I tried to go to bed early because I was tired but my cat, Kimchee would have none of it. She stood in the doorway and cried until I got up.

Also, I don't know if I have told you guys, but I work at the university I'm attending in the school store. Today I put barcode stickers on the wrappers of stickers we're selling and I love this one, I had to share:

ETA: My daughter has started collecting some jointed dolls, and she's got three now. I'm gonna get her some more for Christmas but she got the boy (now named Peter because apparently he looks like a Peter lol) yesterday and Peter's got the cutest buttcheeks I've ever seen? Why'd they give a doll such cute buttcheeks guys? And yes, my daughter is claiming they're in a love triangle. I have to dress them because my daughter is level 2 autistic and she's not very good with fine motor skills. So, as I was putting Peter's pants on, I was like, "OMG HE'S GOT SUCH CUTE BUNS!"

Thanks! We had a huge box full of different stickers, and I didn't have anything to do at work, so Stephanie, my boss, asked me to barcode each of them. Killed 20 minutes. It's slow right now because it's mid-semester and no one is ordering textbooks. I work at the textbook window, which is technically connected to the store and run by the store. Otherwise, I just did homework and talked to my friend in Romania.

How are you?

I always felt like textbooks should only be rented. So much expense at University is text books alone! And they can't always be sold to be reused if a Professor changes something in them ... which isn't that a conflict of interest to selll your own book for your students?? How about a class addition that any student enrolling in your class borrows & only pays for if they lose the book!?

I am fine, tired after working a very long day & then a zoom meeting after work that went on way too long. Thanks for asking!

Totally agree. Luckily so far here at usm Ive had professors who wrote their own books and put them online for us to use for free.

Ugh long days suck. I hope you get some rest

Npixelz: Thanks!

Lemon: Same! I do have to buy books, and it does suck, but a lot of the professors have been like, "I wrote a textbook for you guys, here's the free link!" Which is fantastic. It does suck having to buy textbooks, but as a linguistics nerd, I do get excited for new language books, and I plan to keep those after I leave.

I also got the day off! School is closed for Veterans Day, as is work, since the school is closed lol. Yay! I just got an appointment to go to at 8:30 am. It's approximately 7:30 am, and it just takes 10 minutes down the bus line, so I'm just chilling until I have to catch the bus. The stop is right across the street from my building, so I don't have to walk far to catch one.
I hope you guys have a good day! : )

My daughter wants me to write her stories about the dolls so she can read them. I suggested she write her own stories, since I'm always pretty busy, and I got a big, "I don't WANT to write the stories. I just wanna read them, Dad!"

Shamus, she must really like your story telling and what a special memory that is for her.
Try asking her what details she wants the story to be about and that way she graduates into writing them herself. Or can you dictate to her orally the story & ask her to record or write them down?

I hope your appointment goes well. If it is for Doctor's it is good to go in for routine visits. I have tended to be one who only goes in when I feel sick but have learned that isn't always a good thing, sometimes there are fixable stuff by just getting a routine visit.

I love your enthusiasm for languages, it seems like it is a deciphering game. When I was a kid I used to try to code write with friends in hierographic. But then, I had wanted to be an archaeologist & discover lost cultures & civilizations. Probably because we went to museums for field trips.
Now I just watch documentaries about what other people discover. Recently have watched ones on Cleopatra & the bay of Alexandria.
