Geez, yesterday, a UPS cargo plane crashed as it was taking off a runway in my state. (I dont live close to it.) I saw dashcam footage from a semitruck who saw the plane crashing. A plane, filled with fuel, meant to go to Hawaii. It struck a fuel recycling place, of all things, and an auto parts store. 9 people died and 11 injured. It was 7ndead at one point. I hope that number doesn't continue going up.

I saw that on the news. Devastating. And yes, of all things to hit to just compound the problem.

The image I saw showed the left engine below the wing was on fire as he was taking off.

I am curious to see if it was caused by lithium batteries in the cargo or not.

Yeah, they had no way to get out of that alive. It was already too late by the time things started to go wrong.

The dash cam footage got video of the plane, the driver wasnt parked very far away. They got out of the truck and ran, I'm sure that guy was okay. It was an insane video to be captured, and only because of dash cam.

It was a no-win situation. It looks like the left engine was on fire (big fire) and it was only a couple hundred feet in the air. I can understand the desire to keep it flying (controlled) especially because those kinds of airplane are certified to take off with more fuel than they are legally able to land with (which is why airplanes with problems fly around in circles to dump fuel before landing).

Any landing or crash that was not free of obstacles would break the aircraft apart (and leak fuel). From the dashcam vid it looked like the airplane touchdown on the left wing which crumbled. (Keep in mind fuel tanks are in the wings among other places.) So tragic...

The plane had recently been under maintenance. I wonder if they missed something important or botched the repairs and didnt realize it.

There's been a lot of airplane part falling of airplanes the last couple of years... we know how to maintain these things yet...

I was watching a pilot (I think he's retired now) on Youtube talking about it.

The plane wasn't 400 feet in the air like some sources claim. It only got about 30 feet in the air, which is kinda obvious due to the damage to the nearby businesses.

I really think there should be a large empty field at the end of runways in case of some kind of emergency like that to help reduce the amount of victims. It's always sad to know that the crew on board wouldn't survive, but at least it wouldn't injure or kill anyone going about their day at a nearby business. Though, I don't know how plausible that would be and how fast a crashing plane would stop on that strip of field. The buildings the plane hit absolutely helped slow down the plane...

I agree with you Monkey! I know space can be limited but seriously ... in case of issues the end of the run ways should be clear of buildings, vehicles, walls etc.

Agreed! There definitely should be a place for emergency landings!
