It decided to say hi by scratching at my door. Spooked my cats, I turned on the porch light, saw nothing, and opened the door a crack with flashlight in hand

I've seen opposum's crossing the road.

Considering it was between main and screen doors, no. Definitely surprised when the door opened a bit and noises being made at it

Do possums' make sounds, like how raccoons do?

No wild critters coming in my house or I'd freak out! Bad enough when I get a mouse in the house.

Prolly. But from what i understand they're usually very skittish and prefer to freeze. This one got gently bapped by my flashlight (made contact with no force behind it, as in when I'd knocked it over earlier on accident it had more force) so it did scoot. Prolly also didn't expect a response lol

Opossum are the ones that like to play dead, right? Probably wanted to come in to get warm.

Do you have bears around you? I guess they're hibernating now?

Maybe? Either way once it was tapped by the flashlight it got the memo of "bad idea, chonker"

Bears are a flat maybe. They get reported something like once every decade. Most memorable was the one reported disrupting traffic in town

Do they still play dead if you poke them to see if they are alive ???

In my experience they're more likely to freeze

I've never ever gotten that close to opossum to try it!1 <and I don't think I want to !!>
