Wedding fruit cake tradition is to save a piece of the cake in the freezer & eat it on the one year anniversary.
Many traditional fruit cakes contained alcohol, maybe that helped preserve them?
(And maybe why more people were inclined to eat them with all the alcohol laden dried fruit in them??)
I actually like most fruit cakes... there are a few hard dried fruits I do not like. My fave is the cherry white fruit cake.
