Aside from the old popsicle stick trick, that's pretty much all you can do--immobilize it until the swelling goes down and soreness goes away.
I've had fingers bent in the wrong directions and jammed (push down on the tips towards the hand)--neither are fun. I ended up playing using a "loose fist" for lack of a better term for it (with the thumb on the side against my index finger) for most plays except for setting some balls and that seemed to greatly reduce my digit injuries.

I am mainly using my thumbs and index fingers for setting now. But there are always those moments when you accidentally hit the ball in a different angle than you had planned. And I am still scared of receiving high balls. xD
practice makes better, or at least more comfortable. One good thing about physical education in school is that you get to try out different sports and games.
Alicat - there is so much butter on the movie popcorn over here that adding the extra butter makes it soggy (in my opinion) and for some reason, whatever "butter" it is they use always makes me throw up.
