dragoness, I can't say I blame him if you are in a new area and don't know people but if you are at your Mom's aren't there people she knows who could tell you who is "safer" to go to on their street (I think you said you are in the country so that would mean you'd have to go into town?). Or just drive them around to her friends?
Another option is businesses here give out candy to trick or treater's and churches here do a carnival idea where kids get candy for playing the games. I wouldn't recommend dressing as anything scary for the Churches though. Some clubs have costume parties open to the public and there is generally a haunted house event somewhere.
But it does help the kids to learn not everything is as it appears to be. Our families rule is not to eat any fruit or home made items ( like popcorn balls) or unwrapped candy unless it was from friends and if the wrapper looked funky we had to toss the candy. Even the fruit can be cut up before you eat it but syringing poison into the items is harder to detect and if you are in a state that say legalizes marajuana candy and brownies I might be more concerned.
I know a fun part of Halloween is how much stash you get but it is also the dressing up so there should be a way to work a bit of both. Check your local newspaper or community events section of your t.v. station online to see if there is anything near you.
