Agreed. I've found that although photography etc., is art, understanding design is the key to being consistent. Yes, people can get lucky (with digital medium with virtually unlimited shots due to the low cost), but I've found that instincts are hit or miss and more often than not attributable to subconsciously mimicking other works they've been exposed to.
In my opinion, the hardware is a tool and it's what you do with that piece of equipment be it a camera or a pencil is a differentiator, when you start to look at the purpose/goal/meaning behind a work, it separates the artists from the random hacks.
