I have to dispute that. There are some very good artists but not everything is impressive. I'm not going to lie and say I like someone's art when I don't.
Oh I see. So you think people sometimes join in on a compliment bandwagon? It could be true, I don't really think about it much. But what would you gain from it is what I would wonder.
I try to give advice on how to improve art rather than just say I like/don't like it.
If you compliment art that's good and art that isn't the same way, doesn't that make your compliments meaningless? Keep in mind I'm not talking about anyone specifically here.
I don't feel like I have enough expertise in the art arena to tell someone how they could improve or what they should change, BUT I do know what I like and don't like and I'm more than happy to tell someone if I like what they do.
Oh I see, I see, I understand your point. In a way I do feel the same a lot of the times. Often when I share my art I wish I get more productive responses in what people really enjoy about my art, rather then get comments like: cute! ; adorable! and while I'm grateful they took a moment to comment at all I don't feel like they are significantly helpful or move me forward as an artist.
At the same time though, there is a time and a place for all that too. If you were to say make a thread and make yourself clear that you wish for constructive feedback I'm sure you'll get it, but if you don't point that out I noticed a lot of people don't want to hear those sort of comments so you have nothing else to say then, I like your art and maybe build on particular area's you like.
Also a lot of the times the art I like, is way better then what I can do so I don't think I'd have anything constructive to even say, but I want to show my support for the artist and resort to common compliments. ^^;
@Mousy
I think he means that no artist should feel like there isn't room for more improvement and if someone, even if not an artist, has the right to point out what can be improved in a constructive manner. Artists should learn to respect everyone's critiques and try to use them to move forward.
