Um... discord is a bit like skype, except more accessible with a web format.
It's a server that has text channels and voice channels, and was originally for gaming. So you could get a bunch of people with similar interests in one server, make several text channels and voice channels, and goo!
Text channels would be a bit like.. a different chat room. Voice chats are well... voice chats.
If you were playing a game. There could be like 3-5 general party voice channels, 1 general voice channel, 1 raid voice channel and there was some integration with games and twitch I think on discord.
Then there could be an announcement text channel, general text channel, afk channel, and some locked off channel for guild officers or something.
The people you meet depend on the server and the purpose of the server. I use mine for karaoke, so it's got welcome, general, song-requests, bot-channel.
Then it's got voice channels for karaoke, general, karaoke practice, and away.
