You can blame it on money, but it's really about stuff (power is a gatekeeper for stuff) and money is just the means to get control stuff. Humans are silly and greedy in many ways and it's a genetic feature built into us from millions of years of survival. We are programmed to want more and that programming has constructed us to be better survivors when in competition with others. We've eventually
partially learned that being social extends our survival rates. But in the end, societies are made up of individuals and we default to our programmed basic nature if we're not thinking or feeling.
The movie "THE GODS MUST BE CRAZY" illustrates this very well. If you haven't seen it, I'll stick it in a spoiler.
- [+] SPOILER
- A coke bottle is discarded by a passing plane (garbage!) and lands in an isolated area of Africa and is found by some primitive people. It soon becomes an object of desire as it can be a useful tool, art object to behold, etc. and creates jealousy. And eventually a weapon. It breaks their society apart.
A real world example is the tulip craze in Holland. Or how about the latest fashion trends? People are crazy!!
The real question is how do we get each generation (or the current ones!) to get away from our animal instincts to benefit the greater good?
