I ask what they want to drink in almost every order where they ask for a meal. If you dont want a drink but want a sandwich and hashbrown, you'd just say the sandwich and hashbrown.

I typically don't ask if they want a drink if they don't ask for a meal. If they want a meal, that's when i ask.

But my thing is:
The numbers on the menu are the meals. If you want an egg mcmuffin meal, you just say, "I'd like the number 1 with a (drink)"
If you want just the sandwich, you'd go "I'd like an egg mcmuffin"
But you don't need to say number 1 meal with a hashbrown. That doesn't even complete the meal.

unless they are asking for an extra hash brown?

I generally will say the # and what it is so that we are on the same page and they didn't hear me incorrectly, which sometimes happens. But if I want an extra hash brown I'll usually say I'd like to add a hash brown.

I'm one of those that is often still trying to decide what my stomach can eat that day as I'm getting closer to the counter and looking quickly through the displayed menu. :strain:

Working in the service department does take a lot of patience and you have to keep putting on the courtesy face. I feel for ya.

I usually say what it is and then the number, for the best possible result. I feel as if they'll pay more attention if I say more so I say the food item first. It usually works out well for me, love that I can stick with it!!! I'm the same as far as the adding thing though!!! I usually say "May I add (item) too?" all polite and me so they gain happiness, hahahaha. I also look quickly over the menu in line, every time. It doesn't matter how many times I go there, I might change my mind so I'm always doing that classic customer thing!! I always know what I want like instantly though so it's no trouble at all for me. (Has no comment on the service job working because she hasn't had a single job yet, hahahahaha.)

I typically know what I want when I go somewhere, but I do the same--review the menu when I stand in line. I fear being "that" person who holds everyone else up!

Okay so, how I feel about that is that it's excusable in almost every situation. As in they have children, they're busy on the phone, they have PTSD or something, a lot of the time I feel it's okay and even bad for them but that's just how far my kindness reaches, hahahaha. It's so easy to forget what you want, especially in a hurry!! Precisely why I called it classic, hahahaha.

I understand that to an extent.

Like, i do sometimes go through without really knowing what I want but i usually figure it out within the first few seconds.

But my mom would write down what everyone wanted before leaving the house so she can make the order and go.

If you dont know the menu, you're lucky nowadays to have this thing called computers which has these things called websites that will let you view their menu.

If you dont have a computer, go inside and view the menu so you can familiarize with it before using the drive through. That way you don't hold up the line in the drive through. Also know the inside menu may be laid out a bit nicer because it has more room to display more items. The drive through, it's more compact because of the smaller amount of room. It isnt ideal for someone who isn't familiar with the menu. But this is mcdonalds. The items rarely change. The only things that really change are seasonal items like the pies, mcribs, glazed tenders, and mccafe flavors. We still have the big mac, the quarter pounder, cheeseburgers, kids meals, etc*. Usually these things you learn about via ads.

*different mcdonalds have different owners so things may vary. Don't take it as gospel truth. My location doesn't have blue Powerade while other locations do.

Also, i dont mind them saying "number 1 egg muffin meal", but adding "with a hashbrown bothers me so much.

Lunch is a bit different. They don't need to add "with fries" unless they're asking for a medium or large fry. If you tell me a meal, you automatically get medium unless you request a large.

Super size isn't a thing. Hasn't been since the early 00's. People still ask for super size. You don't need that much McDs.

And about the meal thing, i can tell by how they word things usually if they want an extra hashbrown. Usually they say "and another hashbrown"

If I'm unsure or just verifying I'd ask if they wanted a total of 2 hashbrowns or just 1 so that I can make sure they get their order correct

Super size was a great idea for getting people's money. Like the grand mac. The grand mac was like $5 for just the sandwich.

That's as much as a big mac MEAL

Istg, people need to move faster in drive thru. 30°F weather is torture for workers in the window. Can't feel my face and hands.

seriously, isn't that a safety issue? There should be a policy that protects employees so that the window gets closed due to inclement weather.

Actually there is a law... check out what OSHA in your state says...

"Workplace temperatures. During working hours the temperature in all indoor workplaces must be reasonable. There's no law for minimum or maximum working temperatures, eg when it's too cold or too hot to work. However, guidance suggests a minimum of 16ºC or 13ºC if employees are doing physical work."

Or see if your employer will make some changes to your drive thru to maximize not having to keep the window open so long and crank up the temperature where you and the other drive thru tellers sit.

Although it doesn't typically get that cold here, the drive thru windows have "air doors" that stream a curtain of hot air that keeps the cold air out and warm air in. Jackets and hats are still worn, but it's way better than not having them.
