With uber you'd still have to deal with customer service, accept people also know what your car looks like if they get angry for whatever reason. It just seems like a big personal risk with no protection from the company because you aren't an employer but a contractor.

It is. Australia is making a new law because they're also doing a lot of dodgey stuff in terms of the legal system. Like Taxi's have to have insurance but Uber doesn't. Whenever the police book someone for it Uber covers the legal fees because it's cheaper for them to go to court than to actually comply with the law.

They don't really screen anyone and the 'training' they give is a five minute video. That's literally all it is. That's all the checking they do. They basically skip background checks, which is good if you have a bad criminal record and want a job, but not if you're the passenger. Taxi's have to have video camera's going, GPS tracking and audio to ensure the safety of passengers, Uber doesn't because they don't have any accountability. In Australia, they actually cost about the same to order, it just takes taxi's longer to dispatch because it goes into a queue instead of who is closest (which they're also talking about changing but that's not a law per say as much as it is an internal business change).

Why is that? Is it how busy it is? How joyful everyone is? How everyone expects you to be joyful all the time? How entitled some people can be during Christmas? Having to decorate? The cold? What?

note to self: don't do surveys.

A friend's sister was an uber driver for awhile. I never got how she was ok with wear and tear on her own vehicle but I think you can pick and choose when you want to be available. Too scary for me to be picking up strangers.

Monkey, maybe you could set a spending limit or just ask to not do presents this year? It's basically exchanging money with each other not knowing if the other person will even like the gift you got or not. I'm sure they'd appreciate a bit less financial pressure too.

Yeah, that sucks. But there are plenty of things to enjoy during Christmas too!

Also, Cremuex's idea is a good one.

With some friends we put a limit on what we can spend or we have to do a "white elephant" gift (something we already have that never use), or make each other a gift. If you do a theme exchange like an ornament or something that can be fun.
