Hehe Japan is interested in having young people meet and procreate, probably.

I heard that the Japanese government sponsors meetups for young adults to hopefully create more interest in dating and therefore future marriages and babies.

Ya, I believe that was the focus - to get them to find someone to marry.

Yes, Japan is experiencing negative population growth and an aging population. I've also seem to recall that Japan historically makes it very hard to immigrate to, although that seems to be changing.

I've heard that it's very hard to immigrate there too. I didn't hear about it changing but it does sound like they need to be more open.

is that a strong cultural thing? Meaning they don't want their culture being over taken by another and possibly lost?

One of the safest countries today too. I think it's tied to their culture, sense of responsibility and shame. Can't help but think it will get worse/lose that security if they don't thoroughly screen immigrants.

Well, I think it's also up to their historic, for example, they were never like the US and invaded a bunch of places - only other nearby asian countries, so it's not 'islamist extremists' who would want revenge on Japan, but some Koreans, maybe.

And about domestic threats, they do have that terrible sense of shame... that makes people kill themselves so much.

I was thinking more along the line of people that think laws are optional or that do not respect the law than terrorists. (But terrorist threats are ones to filter out and they certainly do not care about laws!) I believe in countries like Japan where crime rates are very low it's due to the individual's sense of duty (perhaps not the right word for it--responsibility?) rather than the law itself (for the sake of society) or penalties for breaking the law.

Yes, shame is a double-edged sword. But I'd say if given the chance to choose between the two, I'd take that over lawlessness. Innocent victims, collateral damage, and aftermath from bad characters doesn't sit well with me. I feel I might be better able to help someone I know who may be suicidal due to shame than dealing with a random or targeted attack on myself of those I love.

I think the root of it all depends on what a person values and what kind of morals they have.
