It all depends as there are many kinds of telescopes. I bet you could find some used ones around too. Most people get them and use them a few times and put them away for years.

Your best bet would be to get an amateur, small telescope. No one really needs that heavyhigh-tech, large, cool telescope (unless you're really, really into astronomy and astro-photography or so).

PLUS, you don't really need a telescope anyway. Watching an asteroid fly-by in a telescope is nice, but it's also a big hassle :P Seeing a meteor shower with the naked eye and having the satisfaction of knowing that YOU witnessed that without visual aide is, for me, a whole lot cooler!!

P.S. Everyone keep their eyes out on the constellation Lyra for the Lyrids meteor shower from tonight to dawn tomorrow!

I was looking forward to going out tonight to look for meteors falling but it has gotten all cloudy out now - and it was such a gorgeous clear day earlier! Wahhh!!

Fingers crossed!

Hmm should look for used telescopes then. I wanted to watch the meteor shower, but some sites say I need a telescope!

I'm going to try and look tonight, but the meteors seem to be best in the middle of the night and I should be sleeping

You can see a lot more of the meteors streak by when you use a telescope, but the shower can still be viewed without one. The thing with viewing with just the naked eye is that only the brightest meteors will be seen, which means that you might see one or two an hour.

Still overcast where I am, but I hope it's clear out for you guys!

the sky is clear so far! In the summer nights, when it is warm, if I use a reclining lawn chair I can sit for an hour looking up. Can't do it when I am standing though.

Remember: It takes 45 minutes for one's eyes to adjust to the darkness!

So, while waiting for your eyes to adjust you might just see some shooting stars anyway! xD
