To put it into perspective how catastrophically bad this tornado was, considered to be the worst in Kentucky history....
The deadliest tornado, before this current one, was March 27, 1890 with 76 dead.
The most catastrophic before was April 3-4, 1974, where 148 tornadoes touched down in the Midwest and South, killing 63 people in Kentucky.
Then the most recent, besides this year's tornado, severe tornado was on March 2, 2012.
One town had a tornado travelling for 86 miles leaving 6 people killed.
Another town had a tornado travel 49 miles with 2 people killed.
THIS tornado had TOUCHED DOWN, not just travelled, 229 miles! Estimated at least 100 people dead. They're still going through the wreckage and we won't get a final count til some time passes, but this was the WORST in Ky history. Wiped the whole town away, pretty much.
To add, while the basement is the safest place, you can see in footage buildings (possibly houses) that were ripped off of their foundations. For any regular tornado that won't do so much damage, the basement is safe, but this tornado showed no mercy. There wasn't much some of these people could do.
The abnormally warm weather created perfect conditions for a storm this bad.
