Actually, if you're good at editing (your own and other's work), that pays well. (I say this as an extension to more English major opportunities.) Technical and marketing writers are in demand because it takes real skill to be good at it (it pays pretty well too). While it could be boring if you're a novel writer at heart, but if you're into the subject matter, it can be great and rewarding. But I agree, journalism is exactly as you describe.

I know several people who graduated with an English Major who are struggling to find a job without doing something else on the side.

As a web design major, I enjoy what I do but once again, it's a competitive field. I'm contemplating going for a double major in accounting as well for several reasons - the main ones being that the two can complement each other and accounting is more lucrative and in demand.

Have your friends search for Technical Writer and Marketing Copy Writer jobs.

Web designer is another one of those catch-all designations. Pretty much anyone can call themselves a web designer (another pet peeve of mine) and not know squat. (I'm not saying you're in that category!) I've actually run into people who "run" businesses as web designers who only know how to build web pages on Facebook and AOL...

IMHO, to be valuable to a company, you need to know how web design integrates to databases and know javascripts, php, mysql (and/or the related databases) and html5 at the minimum. If you look at it from the POV of an employer, just follow the money trail (all web design is about commerce as far as your career is concerned). The more you know about how transactions are accomplished programmatically (think shopping cart and secure transactions and data security) you become much more valuable (as opposed to those who work with solely with color, art, and interface design).

Accounting would be a great 2nd major. You're good at it and there'll always be a need for accountants!

I know what you mean. I don't claim to be proficient in web design. I'll be taking advanced web design and e-commerce in my upcoming semesters and that includes the shopping carts. I design and screen print t-shirts and I want to try my hand at selling them on a personal website. Right now, I only know about making the aesthetic parts of the website.

You've got it right. I'm not worried about you!

I have the stuff to screen print shirts, but haven't gotten around to making any yet. (-o-) and I are going to attempt a Windlyn-esque shirt for fun. I question the economics of selling screen printed shirts at the level we can produce them. Unless you can produce them really really cheap (then it becomes all about volume) or can find people willing to pay a lot, it'll be more of a labor of love rather than be worth the time really.

I don't want to discourage you from trying it. Aside from profitability, if you have something unique, you might be able to sell them. It'll be good a good experience (you'll learn all about web sites and you can get in cheap and not have to keep too much inventory if you produce on demand/order). Once you have those basics, it'll be very easy to extend to other merchandise.

My biggest issue with that business is anyone (almost literally) can steal your design and print their own (and even sell them!--look how many movies and concert shirts are sold without a penny going to the copyright holders!). But I guess that's the problem with all art in our digital days...

There are studios you can rent out where they allow you to print on your own by hand. I buy my t shirts really cheap from gift shops - 3 shirts for 5 dollars. I don't plan to have them mass-produced. Each one is individually made and I really put my heart into everything I create. I suppose I can copyright my designs but realistically speaking, that's not going to be very effective.p

I'd be interested in seeing your Windlyn inspired shirt.

Just found out one of the mentioned gift shops is closing

On the bright side, everything is on sale. I bought a fanny pack for $3. I know people think they're lame and for fat old tourists but I could totally rock one.

Fanny packs are amazing when you go to theme parks! They can hold all your stuff without having to worry about keeping up with something on your arms or back or in a cubby or whatever.
