I read it last night. It's bittersweet--heartbreaking that your journey had setbacks and heartwarming that you know what needs to be done and you're taking steps back on the right path.
Your story is similar to mine--I had hypertension and was pre-diabetic due to excess weight. The thing that triggered me into full lifestyle changes is I became a full blown diabetic. I did not want to get on insulin (once you're on, you never get off of it) so I got serious about my health. I did a bunch of research and it turns out that carbs are the enemy--they cause inflammation, makes diabetes worse/kills your pancreas, and make you fat.
I lost 30% of my body weight and have kept it off for more than 5 years so far and my BP is normal and my A1c is now normal. In fact, my bloodwork is perfect now (something I've never had before).
I don't count calories now. Counting calories never seemed to work when I did--and believe me I tried many diets and exercise routines. The trick for me is reducing my carb intake to about 30 a day and never more than 10 per meal or snack, and limiting my fat intake as much as practical. Finding substitutes for foods I love was challenging, but completely doable. There are substitute for just about everything now.
I wish you success with your changes and of course we're all here to support you!
