i heard catching the black plague is much less deadly today due to medical advancements, so i doubt there will be any large outbreaks

Still wouldn't want to catch it!!

Small pox is scary. From what I've read that can get out of control quickly!

If you survive Small Pox you're horribly scarred for life.

Queen Elizabeth I supposedly had small pox and survived but her face was pox marked so she wore heavy white make up to cover it, ( no color coded foundation back then!), unfortunately the white powder contained lead and possibly contributed to deteriorating health which she died from...at least that is the story we've been told.

MissAutumn, your avatar looks so festive and so adorable! Love it!!

Back then the paler you were the more prestigious you were. A lot of the ladies at court would also wear the lead based makeup to copy the queen. Elizabeth got the small pox in her twenties. She nearly died. I recall hearing a story that she was wrapped up in a scarlet blanket to help sweat the illness out.

Thanks Lemon. <3

They'd powder their wigs as well...but because of lice I believe.

Sinterklauss day coming up this week for the Dutch and Germany I think celebrate it too.

Powdered wigs came along a few centuries later. Not sure if the used something like talc or lead for that!

I learn so much on Windlyn! :D

After one surgery, while I was recovering, my mom read a book about a lab studying smallpox and had some skin issues at the same time. She made some jokes.

I think they shaved their heads and wore wigs to stop lice. Not sure about the powder, but I think there was a trend to avoid/cover smells and perhaps give the appearance of hygiene...

they first became popular because lots of people were going bald from syphilis, and long hair was seen a status symbol at the time. later they started being used because of lice
