America why are you so weird??

It is quite strange to think that something that's so normal for one person is something entirely different for another person somewhere else in the world

Everyone not doing the same thing as others in the past is at the root of innovation. However, change for the sake of change (just to be different) doesn't always turn out well. Fortunately in this case, when it comes to spelling, yeah, it doesn't make much sense, but the only casualty is bit of confusion (although it could give the reader an insight into where the writer is from--which may have been the intent?).

Actually, now that I think about it, a killer in a murder mystery or two was nabbed/implicated based on such spelling differences... uh, I think there may be a lesson in there somewhere! :)

I don't know why the US dropped the "u". I wonder what other countries where English is not their first language spell ...use the "u" or not?

I think the "-our" spelling has a French origin.

Hmmmm.... I don't know.......... Probably because America wanted to be independent of England and what not, so they changed the spelling as a way of being different from England?

I had to look this up!

Apparently, we can thank Webster (of webster's dictionary) for taking u out of words. He advocated for words to be spelled more like they sound. Colour, theater, and aluminum are a few he could get away with. Wimmen and tung were thankfully rejected. Lol

From grammar girl: https://www.quickanddirtytips.com/educa ... t?page=all

This article is interesting and talks about quotes too. I didn't realize they were so different as well!

Ah, I see! That makes sense! Darn! I thought I was right! It would've made sense, since America is the only country I know of, that has it different!

I probably shouldn't explain it (if you have to explain it, it probably isn't funny!), but I will for you because you're so dear. :)

Flor as in "floor" and linoleum is common flooring material. So one might mistake flour as floor with the new spelling--and baking cookies... never mind! Well, I thought it was perhaps a little amusing at the time! LOL :)
