Mika the name of the female character from the original Ruby and Sapphire games was May to begin with. The games came out way before the Anime since Ash was still in Johto. So when May was introduced she was based off May of the games hence why she is dressed just like her game counterpart same thing with Dawn and Serena from X and Y. Those three are the female game characters implanted into the anime while Brock, Misty, Cilan, Iris, and Clemont are all gym leaders. Bonnie being a real game character as Clemonts sister in the game and the anime while Max in the Hoenn saga is only in the anime. He was the only original character to travel with Ash that wasn't related to the games at all. XD

Mika i just tried out the girl before resetting to the male again. It doesn't matter which one you choose in the game it will always be the Player Character you chose is the kid of Norman the gym leader while your rival the one you didn't choose is the kid of the professor. So the boy was the son of the Professor you just didn't pay attention to that during your original playthrough. Unless you are implying that the Girl should be Norman's Kid regardless of being the player character or rival and the boy should be the son of the professor regardless of player character or rival?

Yes, that is what I am implying. The rival is always the professors kid, but seriously, don't name her May and make her the professors kid xD
