I don't mean to ignorant but what does late deafened mean? You had an illness or accident that took your hearing away? Can you get an ear implant at all? Your eyes are ok though I hope! If your hands don't work right you sure type great! <I hope you don't mind me asking>

I think skype or face time has really helped with the deaf community being able to communicate over the phone. There use to be a machine that would translate...can't recall what it was called.

Late deafened means I became deaf later in life. It was a surgery for me, necessary because of a genetic disease. As my hearing nerves were cut, hearing aids and cochlear implants don’t work. I do have a brain stem implant I don’t use because it really doesn’t help me much.

Technology is amazing. I’d video call, but I’m shy about my face. Plus the hands. And other issues, including eyes. You might be thinking of a TTY/TDD. They don’t translate. Rather, they were keyboards with the ability to hold live conversations over the phone.
