You're awake, but the brain is acting as if you're still asleep. The brain 'paralyzes' the body to prevent you from acting out the movements in your dreams while you're sleeping, but you wake up when that's still in place so you experience the classic sleep paralysis.
Keeping calm, and slow but steady movements is key.
