I met one of the first women to graduate with an engineering degree, most of the time she was the only woman in her classes. She was very intelligent, matter of fact, no nonsense but could laugh at it all even in her 90's.Sad though that even after almost 100 years woman are still a minority in some engineering degrees. However, when looking into Berkeley University, computer classes are about 50/50 so it is changing.

Here's a woman who was a major player in computer programming from 1944: Grace Hopper

That's over 70 years ago! Women have been having a significant impact, why is it still difficult for them to get ahead?

[+] SPOILER
Grace Hopper, computer programmer, designed the MARK series of computers at Harvard in 1944 and coined the term "bug" for a computer fault when a moth caused a hardware fault. In the 1970s, she pioneered the implementation of standards for testing computer systems and components, most significantly for early programming languages such as FORTRAN and COBOL. The Navy tests for conformance to these standards led to significant convergence among the programming language dialects of the major computer vendors. In the 1980s, these tests (and their official administration) were assumed by the National Bureau of Standards (NBS), known today as the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)
