No, I am pretty positive the clock counts down from when you collected an item only.

maybe the time changed to every 12 hours after the event? I thought it was 8 hrs for the event and stayed that way? I never have actually timed it because it really is longer then 8 hours between when I check - I check usually first thing in the morning and then after dinner....
