Re: Food (Mur's Fav Deserts from Malaysia)

Postby galled » Thu Jul 11, 2019 11:48 am

murmurlade mentioned some Malaysian favorites in this thread
https://windlynonline.com/cgi-bin/forums/viewtopic.php?f=37&t=797&p=227034#p226962

OK, I got my google-fu going because the names sounded really interesting and I had no idea what any of this stuff is, and thought it'd be best to post my findings here.
(Everything is colorful and it all looks yummy!) :)
(I've added questions that popped up, so if you know the answer please chime in!)

ice kacang
Image
What it is: This is made with red bean (syrup perhaps?) and shaved ice.
Question: Is that vegies (corn) on it too?

cendol
Image
What it is: The description called it jelly.
Question: Is the jelly the green noodles or the clear stuff part of it?

pisang goreng
Image
What it is: Banana Fritters
Questions: Is there a batter on the outside? Any idea what that's made of (flour, rice flour, etc.)?

kuih
Image
What it is: Cakes, cookies, dumplings, pudding, biscuits, or pastries made from rice or glutinous rice

apam balik
Image
What it is: Fluffy pancake with cream corn and peanut

roti tisu
Image
What it is: Sweet flatbread
Question: Is this crunchy or just crispy (like a ice cream cone or delicate pastry)?

sago gula melaka
Image
What it is: Pudding made from the sugar from a coconut tree.
Question: Does this have a coconut flavor?

The pudding almost looks like tapioca! I've tried coconut pudding before but it was cut into squares, I had it in Hawaii and they placed it on banana leaves and had a sauce with it.

Some of those gelatin squares and fried dumplings I've tried at an Asian buffet in L.A. ( ya, all you can eat pastries!!).

They all look so yummy. :scream:

The sweet flatbread looks a bit like a crepe. Must be a lot stiffer.

Yep, looks like a crepe and the ball of butter would fit that motif! ;)

Ice kacang is also known as ABC to us!! Yup, that's corn. ABC is basically shaved ice with colouring--- hard jelly, peanuts, corn, rose syrup and evaporated milk.

You'd be correct in assuming the green jelly is cendol, but mostly cendol refers to the mixed dessert!
(the green jelly is made out of rice flour)

Roti tisu, depending on where you get it made... it's flatbread coated in sugar/salt crystals.. there are some sections that are chewy and tearable (thick) and the thin parts are crispy and crunchy!! It's actually super filling and sometimes my classmates will just eat 1 for lunch.

Sago refers to the glutinous balls and gula melaka is sugar! Yup, it tastes suuper coconut-y and sweet with the gula melaka!

//vibrates intensely
Another dessert I LOVE is the thai mango sticky rice!!
Image
It's fresh mango, sticky rice, and coconut milk~ the mango is sweet and cold whilst the sticky rice is a little bit salty and warm, it goes amazing together..

I thought the cone was with vanilla ice cream, not butter. Is it butter or ice cream? I guess if it is ice cream it is not a very big scoop.

When I think of sugar I don't think of from a coconut tree.

What does sugar from coconut taste like? Is it a coarser texture then table sugar?

The cone is with vanilla icecream.. unless gal is talking about something else?

I don't think sugar is made from coconuts for these desserts, only the milk!

Oh, those Malaysian desserts look tasty. Thin, stretchy crepes with nutella and fresh fruits are a real treat for me too. Since I'm trying to lose weight, I won't be having any of those for a while.

What are your favorite healthy recipes, everyone?

Tomatoes, cheese, garlic, rice, spinach, and peppers are my base ingredients for many dishes. I'd like to experiment more with tofu as a protein. Some of my friends can disguise it to taste like just about anything, except bacon. Haven't figured that one out yet.

Tofu kind of takes on the flavor of what you cook it with/in but the texture is a whole other story.

I have to say I prefer fried tofu...on it's own it is too mushy and in miso soup I feel like it is sludgy. I haven't tried making desserts with it yet though.
