Things About Roleplaying...

Postby charity » Tue Mar 25, 2014 6:21 pm

... that make you want to throw yourself into the ocean.

1) People not reading your intro post. (Or any post, it seems.)

On another site I'm test piloting a new character. She is a human with deer ears (shikamimi is what I'm referring to it as-- but w/e that's not the important part.) Entering a neko cafe roleplay, in the intro post I make references to the fact that she has these ears--- that she has "four letters in common with the owners" (assuming that they would figure out that I meant "----mimi". that she had animal ears.) I even made an avatar on a dream avatar creator for her, clearly showing that she has deer ears.

Not just one, but two (the only two that have responded) people/characters have referred to her as a neko.
Ugh. Okay. No big deal. It's not like they're calling a dog a cat. Deers and cats are animals that can easily get mixed up...

Yeah no.

Okay GD, tell me the things about roleplaying that make you want to not.

(does this even belong in the GD??? oops...)

No no, this definitely belongs in the GD- no worries. :) If it wasn't, I'd just move it. Never feel worried about where you put something. If you're unsure, ask me and I can move it if need be!

I totally get where you're coming from, though. Diana and I are heavy RPers, and we used to get so annoyed with well- to put it bluntly, dumb people. I never understood why someone wouldn't read something, especially in an RP. That's literally 75% of a roleplay, is reading things. The other 25% is writing (I say 75-25 because you have to reread/proof read what you write half the time anyways)!

It really bugs me. I get what you mean, too. I absolutely adore deer people, or anything with antlers. Always have and I always will. But it's like, if you're not going to read it, why bother RPing with that person? Or in that group? Ugh.

I also had an RP not too long ago where I had a person who continuously meta-gamed (meta-rp'd..?). It was a Walking Dead style RP, which means it takes place in a universe where generally nobody knows what zombies are. You know how boring an RP is when you know what's going on and where to shoot? There's zero fun in that. Half the battle is seeing what they do, how they react to new information about their "enemy."

.. Well, one of my characters, this naive cop-in-training, Naomi, she's freaking out about "These.. These things!" kind of moment (she was purposely stereotypically cheesy haha) and then this one guy I was with, turns around and blatantly goes "Why do you do that? You know what they are. They're zombies. Blah blah blah movies like Resident Evil, 28 Days Later, etc. Why do you call them Walkers and Biters?"

I was like.. Really? Really? IN THIS WORLD. RESIDENT EVIL DIDN'T EXIST. WE CLEARLY STATED THIS. And like, just went against everything.

It just makes me so mad, because role-playing is literally improv. In improv, you don't shoot things down unless it's your character doing it. You are supposed to ROLL WITH EVERYTHING. Contradict ONLY IN STORY. It made me so mad when he did that.

.. But his character got bitten and died. ;D So it all worked out.

Okay! c: I figured it did, but I also second-guessed myself and was like "does it belong in the ooc forum???? arrrgh."

Deer people are the best. ouo I roleplay... two, i think? One has antlers (Nagaise) and one doesn't (Flora) Lately most of my characters in modern fantasies have had weird ears. Deer ears, bear ears, you name it. ouo

ARGH! I admit I'm sometimes guilty of referencing out-of-universe things without realizing it, but come on now!

Serves him right, getting killed. owo)b

Oh nah, OOC is strictly for RPs. You're good!

It happens though! I've meta-gamed, everybody's meta-gamed. There's nothing wrong with accidentally doing it. We all do. It's hard to separate what YOU know, and what only your character knows. I don't think a single person HASN'T meta-gamed before.

It's just.. I guess what pissed me off most, was how snarky and "in your face" he was? Worst part was, I was the CREATOR of the RP! Like, why the heck would you contradict the creator? It made absolutely no sense. Usually whoever made it, what they say, goes! Ugh.

Yeah, he fell into a pool that had zombies in it, and trying to get out he got all nabbed up. It was his fault!

I hate it when people don't look at your nicely laid out posts in the front of the rp, that like... describe the story and setting? And then they start going off on something and you just have to sit there like "wat?"

also hate it when it's blatantly obvious we were planning out a story/certain events, like as the creators of the rp, and then someone decides to make something completely random happen, and then ooh look. they're the star. Then they get mad if you tell them to tone it down. yay.

Ugh, yes. We've had so many people like that in the past. :/ I hate when people skip through all the intro stuff. Especially when we work so freakin' hard on it, too.

Also yes, one of my BIGGEST pet peeves is the "attention craver," who always has to be the star. In the zombie RP we did, I swear that "Chase" guy, the one that I was just talking about, that was him. Ugh. I was NOWHERE near him, then magically he's right there where my character is.

THAT'S ANOTHER PET PEEVE OF MINE. I understand trying to move your proximity through a teeeenny bit of god-modding so you can interact with other people- I completely get that and I let it slide. But when you blatantly make a point in your post to say like "NOBODY ELSE WAS AROUND" kinda thing, it bugs me. Because usually I like to have 1-2 intro posts before I associate with other people.

But yeah, like. In the RP (for people who aren't Diana, haha) my character was holed up in an office building, and I specifically made mention that she had pushed a filing cabinet in front of the door in case any zombies came by, but there wasn't very many, because a) it was 6 months after the infection. That's a LONG time. If you've ever played the WD games, the first one takes place like 3 months in. b) The elevator was broken, and the only access was several flights of stairs up to the floor she was on (it was like the third, or fourth or something), sealed off by fire doors.

AND THEN. THE GUY. Has the nerve to say (my girl at the end of my post moved the filing cabinet, and it made a small screeching noise, since it was heavy) that it made this GIGANTIC NOISE THAT ECHOED ALL THROUGHOUT AND IT WAS THIS HORRIBLE METAL GRINDING NOISE THAT HE HEARD FROM ACROSS THE STREET.

It really annoyed me, because then he said there was like, all these zombies like, rushing the building and stuff. Ugh, just annoyed me.

And then I specifically told people that it was Walking Dead style- that they were very generic zombies. Then I don't know how many times people said they were running.

Ugghhh. This thread is easily going to be my favourite- lmao.

I was sooo confused by the cabinet thing. I was skim reading, then suddenly everyone was like. METAL SCREECH/ SONIC BOOM. and I was like... did the fire nation attack? are we getting bombed? lol.

Everyone went to where you were. I was hoping people would come visit me. I had a whole lot of interactions planned out... if my guy stayed put. I finally brought him out, and the person who said they were going to be the one he stumbles across stopped playing. oTL

Yeah! So it wasn't just me! He was literally across the street. You wouldn't hear someone moving a filing cabinet.. It's just stupid. I was kinda glad that RP died, that guy was annoying. I wanted to keep it going though. :( But I left for Cuba, which RPs always die if the owner leaves.

And yeah, I guess it's just because I was the creator. So people kinda flocked to me. What kinda things did you have planned? Haha.

Well like, one of the guys made his character to specifically hate guys like mine (which made me figure he was going to end up going my direction, but I dunno what happened. lol.) So I was going to have fun if his character wound up near mine. My character would've been really stubborn and not let them in right away. haha. drammaaaaaaaa

Well drama is what makes an RP go. I hate when people in the rules go "NO DRAMA!" because it's like, then what's the point of an RP? A roleplay is supposed to be creating drama, and seeing how the characters deal with it. It wouldn't be fun if it was like:

"Hey. 'Sup?"
"Nothing, you?"
"Nothin'."

LOL. It's so boring!

i am very glad i made this thread. c:<

ugh, this doesn't happen very often, but like when people are plotting out things and forget to include people? i don't mean like "oh so and so were going to go do something but because we have to include everyone they're going to bring an ARMY" but no like...

the first big roleplay i was in (it went on for like 3 years on gaia? it was ridiculous i was so little goshies) at one point had this huge plot about finding out the secrets of the inn with like riddles and puzzles and stuff... and they had forgotten to include ANY of my characters in the draw that decided who was paired up with who. so for like a good month or two i had five characters with hardly anything to do--- there were only like 10 or so characters left out of a cast that topped out around 50? (there were about eight regulars i think, each had as little as 3 characters and as many as like 8? 9? 10? that place was crazy and now that we're all older i want to ask for like a reboot but most of them are in college/have actual lives ;-;...)

anyway tl;dr: important plot points that are supposed to include everyone that don't.

Haha, I am too! Man, I could complain about RP pet peeves all day.. Lol. So thank you!

Also yes! I know! I hate that kind of thing. For my RPs, I try to include everybody as much as possible, and I try to make sure everybody has something to do- although it's hard, because I usually have a maximum of 2 characters, since I do post quite a bit at a time.

I've been in so many RPs where they just.. Blatantly ignored me too, which pissed me off even more. I remember this one that I joined, and my character was following these people, and hiding somewhat, but it wasn't very inconspicuous, so at any moment they could have seen her or something, but they just kept on, and literally ignored my post. Not like "They heard something but kept walking." But literally didn't even mention it. So I revealed my person, flat out talked to them and approached them, and they refused to post and the RP died.

Like, REALLY? That profile was also the most extensive stupid thing I've ever done. It was literally like, pages of useless info you had to fill out. I spent forever on it, just for them to quit like that. I swear it was because of me they did. If you wanted a 1x1, don't invite other people!

Lime and I try to include everyone. I usually just interact with whoever's a leftover, or lime. lol. And then we try to make sure people post "in order" so we can always know where everyone is and if we need to respond to someone new. I hate it when people post like.. four times in a row, or are just filling up pages with them interacting with one other person, and they never give any chance for anyone else to butt in. :<

We do. At least we make a conscious effort to try and include every as much as possible. Especially the nervous/new people. And yeah, we usually stick to a posting order, which I find easier to organize.

And yess. I only do that if nobody else is posting, so I do it to try and keep things going. I'll admit I'm guilty of that if it's just me and one other person (Like Kat and Ocean, in the zombie one, Diana).

I did it because it was slowly dying, because one of the main people dropped out, and then nobody wanted to RP with that one asshole guy I mentioned. So it was going downhill fast. :/
