When Words are On the Tip of Your Tongue

Postby Boris » Sun Jun 25, 2017 10:55 pm

I was playing around with someone on another site, and we both have no experience in building cabins, and I do not know how to build one. I was about to say "Maybe cabins are too..." but I forgot the word I was going to use. I believe it starts with an S, and it's where you're eager to jump into a task, but you lack the experience and knowledge to complete it, like me building a cabin even though I have no knowledge of how to build one, except I know it takes hard work to build one... at least when you are stranded n an island without building equipment.

hint: if you are stranded on an island use whatever you can to build a lean to - driftwood, palm fronds, (you can peel the palm fronds into thread like strips to tie your logs to), chances are there won't be too many supplies that you can use without tools. Interlock the logs for more support or build a mud or rock hut.
Ever watch the show Gilligan's island? Weave those grasses together and use some bamboo!
Did you ever play with the lincoln log sets when you were a kid? Legos? Play minecraft? :cheeky:

But I do hate it when the word is on the tip of my tongue and I draw a blank. Did you guys build your shelter?

I've watched that show, and I found enough logs... but your ideas would be best.

Some words take a while or me to remember what they are, but the synonyms I've come across aren't the words I'm looking for. Maybe you can help me by thinking of words and listing them off. Here is a list of words I've seen.
  1. Arduous
  2. difficult
  3. hard
  4. Strenuous
  5. exhausting
  6. taxing
  7. tiresome
  8. sapping
  9. fatiguing
  10. Wearying
  11. depleting
  12. wearing
  13. burdensome
  14. tiring
  15. backbreaking
  16. troublesome
  17. onerous
  18. painful
  19. tough
  20. labuorious
  21. painful
  22. rigourous
  23. grueling
  24. formidable
  25. uphill
  26. harsh
  27. heavy

No, it's not that. Think of someone who is unskilled in cabin building building a cabin.

galled wrote:sophisticated?
I don't think that is the word.

"Maybe building a cabin is a bit ___"

It is if you're stranded on an island with logs.

I'd say troublesome in the case of that you don't really need one. In your case I would say strenuous. Cabins are just difficult to build if no experience, like me lol

Maybe you are looking for a synonym of unrealistic or impossible? Like steep (learning curve) or spectacular.

Or a synonym of slow? You mentioned time a few times.

If you are talking directly to skill/work required to build a cabin, maybe scholarly, or labour intensive is what you are looking for?

And you're absolutely certain it starts with an s?

Can you think of any synonyms by chance? Or using a reverse dictionary if you know what it means but not the word?

Maybe that can get you maybe even a synonym to the word you're looking for.

I didn't know such things existed... as for using it, I'm not sure it would be accurate seeing as how I have a hard time explaining something.

I think you're onto something there, about the synonyms, but slow, no, that's not it. I can't explain it differently.

It's like me building a cabin, but I built it poorly and it falls apart... I can't explain it... I hope I remember the word soon.

I don't know... hm... it's like you're jumping head first with excitement into a project, but it's much more harder and difficult than you realize.
Kitalpha Hart wrote:And you're absolutely certain it starts with an s?

Yes, I'm sure of it.
galled wrote:How about superfluous?

That might be it, but... I don't know.
