Yup
Origin Islands
When you get it, a lot of stats/skills cap at 20 instead of 15, Legend becomes second highest rank to Creator, a whole new area is introduced, new characters, new vacation homes, dragons for pets, etc
But to get most of that (as I recall, the Elderwood and Terra Nimbus holiday homes are the only things not restricted by this), you need to hit level fifty and go through that quest chain
And there's still eighteen tons of stuff where they have ready for DLC but never got any :|
It's $1.50, btw

if you change lives do you lose the ability to do the things from your old life or do you get to do both?

There's some things you need to be on the Life for to get the points, but about 85% is whatever for the game, but those will tell you when you're looking at them. "As a Miner, mine x ore and cash in the Bounty"
So I can be running as a Hunter who had Miner at one point and get Miner points
Tho you need to be that Life to check in
But you can mine as a Mercenary, or cut trees as a Tailor
Just be aware that there are items that are restricted to various Lifes. Some are restricted entirely to just one Life
So you have to be a Cook to wear the beginner Cook's outfit, or the one you get when you hit the rank above Master
And the Fledgling tutorial can be skipped after the first one tho I prefer playing through. I 1000000000% recommend it if it's a Life you've definitely never played before

i feel like then perhaps the best thing to do is go through all the lives learning the basics at the very least, perhaps a decent amount of recipes before settling on the one you ultimately want to play as last?

Considering you can change at will, you don't need to settle
