Gizzie was testing out my 3d background abilities with your awesome art because I am to lazy to draw people right now I hope you don't mind me using your art as my model

for shading i used a water brush with 'spread' style in paint tool sai
it's basically a brush with feathery edges, it kind of looks like clouds

i use that brush for both shading and highlights
i'll set the layer to shade or luminosity, and then paint wherever i want it to be darker/lighter. i'll usually pick a color from the image and then change it with a hue slider later to see what looks best. for that picture i had two shade and two luminosity layers that were different colors. the shade layers were pink and blue, the luminosity layers were blue and yellow.

then i open it up in photoshop and use the paint daubs filter.
i started doing that originally to make the linework thinner because i'm lazy and hate linework LOL but lately i've been testing it out after coloring and getting interesting results

then sometimes i'll duplicate the layer, put a gaussian blur on it, then set it to overlay to get a dreamy look. however i didn't do that for this image because it made the darks too dark

then at the end i'll put a paper texture over the whole thing set to 'overlay'. i get the paper texture from a website called lostandtaken :3

it sounds complicated, but it actually takes less time than the other method where i draw the shadows with a smooth brush
