My latest portrait.

Postby Candi Formaldehyde » Mon Jun 22, 2015 7:32 am

I've recently started concentrating on drawing portraits, and I ask my friends to either model for me or send me a reference photo. Here is the last portrait I drew:

I want to use a female model but I have a hard time shading hair, so any advice on that is appreciated.

That looks amazing!
I totally bomb at portraits. x. x I would love to be able to draw them.
But I am more of a half or full body person.

Well I am sure deviantart has a lot of photos for portraits in their stock image section
if you ever want to try to draw a female portrait. :3

Thank you :3

I like to draw live models but it can be tiring and boring sitting for a portrait because it takes me a while. One of my art instructors to,d me that when drawing portraits, you have to forget what you know about what a face is supposed to look like and draw exactly what you see. We got to practice drawing nude models in that class as well as a skeleton and still life.

You're welcome.

And that is a very good thing to keep in mind.
I never went to art class or anything so I am actually a self taught artist.
But yeah I can understand that drawing a live model is better. I just use and over analyze online tutorials and anatomy and how it looks as well as looking at my own anatomy.

I think the most trouble I have is arms and fingers.

Hello, Candi Formaldehyde

That's excellent! I don't know if Aidas really looks like that, but your portrait looks like a real person/very lifelike. Good job!

Fuu-Chan: The art classes were part of my college courses. I also took a gouache painting class which was fun, but painting isn't my strong suit. I have one of those wooden figures whose joints you can move to change its poses. That helps me with anatomy.

galled: Thank you :)
I considered posting a photo for comparison but then I thought he might not want me to be distributing his photo online. It's just out of courtesy to him.

Thank you for the positive responses! :)

Lemon Cheesecake: he's a wonderful guy and he will be helping me to learn Lithuanian.

Maro: I'll let you know if I have an open slot. I might be taking classes in college so I don't have as much leisure time.
