your bodies warning signs

Postby Lemon Cheesecake » Sat Mar 12, 2016 7:49 pm

6 important ways your body might be trying to warn you of medical problems:

[+] SPOILER
Eyes protrude from their sockets? Do you see more white than you should? Look closely at how your eyeball fits into the socket. If you notice a protrusion, it could be a sign of an over-active thyroid. This condition, known as hyperthyroidism, can also lead to sudden weight loss, an irregular heartbeat, sweating and nervousness.

Thinning eyebrows? If you are losing hair around your eyebrows, particularly toward the outside, that could be a sign of an under-active thyroid. Separate from hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism is a condition in which your thyroid gland doesn't produce enough of certain important hormones. This is most common in women over 60, and the disease can cause obesity, joint pain and heart disease.

Smooth, pale tongue? A healthy tongue should be pink and bumpy, covered with small nodules known as papillae. If your tongue is smooth and pale (or unusually sore and swollen), it could be a sign of nutritional deficiencies such as low iron, folate and vitamin B12.

Dark, thick skin around the back of your neck? If you notice a velvety discoloration of the skin around your armpits, groin and neck, it could be a sign of diabetes. Acanthosis nigricans, a skin condition which is characterized by thick, dark-pigmented skin, typically occurs in people who are obese or have diabetes. Children with the condition have a higher risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, and although it is rare, acanthosis can also be a warning sign of a cancerous tumor in the stomach or liver.

Bumps on your knees? Do you see small, yellow bumps that are soft (they can also be flesh colored or red) on your elbows, joints, tendons, knees, hands or feet? These could be "cholesterol bumps" or xanthomas, a condition due to high cholesterol levels or other serious health issues such as pancreatitis. Some bumps can be very small, while others can be larger than 3 inches in diameter.

Swollen feet or ankles? We've all experienced the occasional swollen foot or ankle if we've been on our feet for a long period of time. However, in some cases, this condition is caused by something much more serious — heart failure. Swelling of the legs and ankles is caused by fluid accumulation in the body, which can be a sign of worsening heart failure. You may feel that your shoes are tighter than normal if swelling in this area is increasing.

I had a warning sign of a cough that refused to go away
It magically disappeared when we went to investigate
And we investigated cuz they were getting worse, and starting to hurt
Good thing, too

fortunately some warning signs, such as vitamin deficiencies, can be more easily corrected. Unfortunately, some signs are for symptoms not so easily correctable. But the majority of people who recover from more dangerous illnesses say the prognosis is better, even correctible or curable, if found earlier.

Unfortunately, my brother in law had a cough for months that the Doctor kept prescribing him antibiotics for bronchitis for but he only worsened. About 3 months later they retook the chest xrays at different angles and found a cancerous tumor which grew too rapidly for him to recover.

Kit: I am glad you were able to get treatment early enough. You could probably teach people a few things about your experience.
Any other warning signs you can give people a heads up on?

Loss of appetite, weight loss (I went from ~135 to 106 in less than a month), coughing that even powerful cough meds can't stop

If the doc is prescribing stuff that doesn't work, get another opinion
The one who gave me the meds and an inhaler wasn't my regular one

There are quacks out there. Mom was in a car accident and she broke her face, and the first guy she was told to go to said that her face wasn't broken, have some pills

From what I read, I was stage one, teetering on the edge of stage two

oh my gosh - that was terrible for you and your Mom's situations! I hope your Mom was able to recover too!!

I just want to cringe at thinking how horrible the coughing must have been. That can cause muscle strain and sometimes broken ribs too. Sounds like you were fortunate to get it caught in the early stages, despite the misdiagnosis.

I think that is a good point to note: if it doesn't seem right then it really is important to go for a second opinion.

Re: Quacks

Yes, the are some pretty bad doctors out there! I remember a comedian once said (I think it was George Carlin), "Somewhere out there in the world is the world's worst doctor. Think about that for a moment!"

She's still working through it, and it's been about two years
Her balance is shot
Some places she can't feel pain at all
Her migraines have gotten worse
I have a screenshot from when she went to see a specialist and they stuck something up her nose that helped with the pain, at least a lil bit

Yeah, the cough started as annoying. Then it got longer. Then I was hurting on my waist. Then breathing while in a coughing fit got hard

Another realization of how much most of us take our health for granted until we start feeling pain.

After I had vertigo the exercises the chiropractor showed me to do really helped me with my balance. And after I had headaches from being rear ended the chiropractor popped everything back in place and the headaches went away. I am wondering if they could help your Mom?

The back thing? No, she's gotten them for years, usually in the form of my literally walking on her back

That is so sad! I feel for her being in constant pain/discomfort. I hope she can find something to help relief the pain for longer at least.

Her new meds make her hibernate
She had a week-long break last month (she's a teacher) and spent most of it asleep
Asleep on the couch
Asleep in bed

well, that's a short term fix but no way to continue long term. If she hasn't already, have her ask around with her coworkers who is a good chiropractor and then follow it up with a good physical therapist. If you get someone who knows what they are doing then it can be so releasing and get you out of pain. Unfortunately if nerve damage is involved I am not sure what they can do, but if there is pressure or pinching on a nerve then they can help.

She's already getting that stuff
The meds that konk her out are new
And the "sleep all the time" part isn't so much, so I think that was a temporary side effect
