I'm pretty sure they just didn't wanna support all these pokemon in every new game anymore. Especially if you wanna introduce new graphics or game mechanics, having to apply it to every pokemon that was ever in existence is just plain torture. If it's one of the main selling points of the game, they made a pretty bold move with removing it though.

Yeah, I know that, but it still sucks. It was a bold move, and it had a lot of backlash.

They also recently announced DLC, which I think is a first for Pokemon, so they're doing new things left right and centre
