galled I initially felt hesitant about telling her I'm an artist because I didn't want her to think I was trying to mooch, but then she asked to see my art and even asked questions about my comic throughout the weekend, so at least she seemed interested. c: I also tried keeping my "how to get started" questions to a minimum since she'd been answering them from fans all weekend (and they had similar questions to mine, so I just listened to her answers).

Living in California, I imagine it's pretty common to run into industry people? What type of industry are/were you looking to get into, if you don't mind me asking? :3

The way I would do it was to ask if I could ask--something like "I know you're asked this all of the time, but I would really love to ask for your advice on how I could make contacts in the industry *if* and when you'd might be able to--and it's OK to say no, I totally understand." Something like that. You're really asking the question. LOL :cheeky:

Just be sure to ask a question that's specific rather than general. Otherwise you'll come across as possibly being a tire kicker rather than being serious. I'm guessing you got to hear the answers she was giving to con goers, so of course you wouldn't ask the same questions. It's the perfect opportunity to get specifics/clarifications later on. The big trick is to know who you're talking to and have determined this person might know what you would like help with. Then in addition to being really grateful with the first tidbit they give you is to be sure to let them know you're young, ambitious and really want to get into the industry. They're more likely to help if they feel their efforts will net results rather than small talk.

Yes, Los Angeles was the center of the entertainment industry at one time so the concentration of industry people was greater than any other city. I'm from NY and went to school at NYU (Manhattan) and you'd think a huge city like that would be huge too, but it didn't compare at all.

I worked in movie, TV show, and TV commercial industry in NY and Hollywood.

This is good advice! I'll keep this in mind for when I volunteer at the next con in a few weeks. I believe I'll be working alongside a comic book artist and another celebrity guest, but I'm not sure who yet. Thank you. :')

It's really cool that you've worked in TV and movies! Wow, you're like a celebrity! Did it take a long time to find your footing in the industry? Is there a specific tip that stuck with you on your journey?

I hope things work out wonderfully for you! I've been on both sides so I have a bit of insights on what works/makes the most sense. ;)

Well for me, making movies is the coolest industry in the world. When you work with the top people who all love it just as much as you do, there really is nothing better than working together to achieve the same goal/make something as good as you can make it. It's one of those things in life that is magical and I feel very priviledge to have gotten there.

Some would say at one point or more I have obtained a level of minor celebrity, so I have had people asking about getting into the industry and how this or that is done and like I've said, you learn to weed out the lookie-loo's and will give the best advice you can to those who are driven to follow their dreams. It's the paying it forward thing.

How long depends on what you mean by footing. I had worked in the industry while going to school and was on a plane to LA 4 days after graduation with a job lead at a TV commercial production company in Hollywood from someone I had met on a production in NY. I flew out landed in the morning and got the job that afternoon and one thing led to another and another and I never went back.

My tip would be more of a life tip--your success aside from skill and craft depends on the personal relationships you form--especailly in large collaborative projects/industries that require large numbers of people working together on deadlines. You'd think Hollywood and all and it would be obvious--but it really is who you know (the what you know has to be there of course). Be a great person to work with, with amazing skills and you can obtain your dreams.

We, all of us Winners here, wish you all of the best luck! We believe in you! Keep us posted on your journey and we are, of course, here for your support! :)

I love that you were listening to the answers!

Sometimes it helps when other people ask & you don't have to.

That was nice of them! :3

Was it a variety of donuts or were they a specific kind?

Thank you. I have been extremely fortunate. It is a fun industry (I won't say it too loudly, but if I could have my expenses paid for I'd work for free), filled with colorful people--satisflying in so many ways. The only part I didn't like about it were the very long days (12 hours+ quite a lot and too many 20 hour days). Getting paid time and half, double time, triple time(!) is good, but it wears on you. When you move up, you never really leave work (mentally especially), but when you love what you do, as they say. :)

I've never worked in the art world (other than movies, etc., which I consider mostly commerial art), but I see a lot of parallels. I don't know specifics about your industry, but I'm happy to offer insights of how I see it from my experience. After I left the studio I moved to physical publishing and see a lot of commonality there as well (writing instead of drawing). I know with my resume' I come across (especially on the interwebs) as a poser, but I am for real. Several Winners know me IRL.

I hope you feel better soon!

To help those low on feathers for the event I am adding a pengwing treasure hunt.

Find " :pengwing: You found me! "
(this one NOT included) on any of MY threads only, and you get 100 feathers, enough for a 5 pull at the shrine.

Tell me the thread & page number you found it on in a PM

I will change them up every day so keep looking. Good luck!

(If you see this message in my thread then there is a pengwing waiting to be found)
