*sigh*... Bottle Flipping

Postby Mousy » Fri Oct 28, 2016 2:14 pm

Okay so Moooost of you know that I teach 5th grade math and science.
If you didn't, now you know.

Anyway, as a teacher, I'm charged with making sure that my lessons are engaging and relevant. Last week, in what I can only describe as a momentary lapse of judgement, I decided that bottle flipping would be a fabulous lab for our standard that we were teaching. That standard is Force and Motion. In theory, this is an amazing idea and so much fun. In practice, I wanted to tear my hair out strand by strand. The kids had a blast! I... did not.

I had 2 motives behind this activity. 1. They will use it to learn our standard and have fun. 2. This lab had them flipping bottles a couple hundred times. I was hoping it would get it out of their systems because they are driving us crazy flipping them in the middle of class and the lunchroom. .....nope.

sigh.... I may have made the bottle flipping worse now that they know the science and perfect technique behind it.

:Feather: What do you guys think of the bottle flipping?
:Feather: Have you attempted it?
:Feather: What's the coolest one you've seen?

I dont know what bottle flipping is!
Kids at my schools did the things where they twist the bottle until the cap flies off. Now that is dangerous!

I have one friend who almost 65% of the time can bottle flip. For some reason, it helps her when we all yell "GUSTO!" I've tried it but ended up hitting another friend in the stomach because it flew out of my hands as I aaccidentally & aggressively tossed it in the air...

One time though, the same friend who can sorta land bottles successfully bottle flipped 5 times in a row.

I caught one of my quietest little girls flipping 2 bottles at once and they both landed perfectly! She and I both started jumping up and down and cheering. I GUESS that part was fun. Haha

What cracks me up is these are so simple and inexpensive compared to the electronic gadgets--kind of like the fun/value kids get out of a big cardboard box!

I always fail!
The coolest one I have seen is where my friend's sister threw it on the window sill of the band room (it's really tall) and made it without a single problem.
Have you done any cool flips?0:

Hah! Inevitable I suppose. :)

I want to hear about one of Mousy's kids designing a Mars lander to land on its landing gear 20 years from now! Wouldn't that be fantastic?
